@DISTURBANCE: AN EXPERIMENTAL LGBTQI+ ART RESIDENCY AND SHOWCASE

@Disturbance is an exciting project that blends queer performance and creative works with video art.

As a contemporary, innovative arts collective, our goal is to explore and disrupt power dynamics, and celebrate queer bodies, identities and sexualities. We do this through a hybrid of powerful physical events hosted in and live streams that transcend the boundaries of digital and physical. Everything is delivered from our base in Ugly Duck, Southwark.

@Disturbance is passionate about diversity and always seeks to platform underrepresented voices of the arts.

Born during the pandemic, @Disturbance is a reaction to forced hibernation

The pandemic was devastating for all, but particularly for LGBTQI+ artists working in nightlife, art and cultural institutions – all of which were shut down overnight. With no events, many who worked in cabaret, club, drag and at small venue gigs lost their source of income. In the wake of this catastrophe, we felt the need to act. We had to make space, co-create, and provide support through an opportunity that went further than Zoom. Soon after, the idea came to life when @Disturbance creative director and Ugly Duck curator Deen Atger crossed paths with computer art lecturer Rob Hall – who played a vital role @Disturbance’s creation and continues to provide both his extraordinary skills and valuable equipment. Together, we began to explore the space that exists between gender, and how that corresponds to the space between physical and digital, leading to the birth of @Disturbance.

A celebration of queerness, subversion and creativity

Today, we are proud to offer a supportive, unique space for artists in Ugly Duck’s spacious Victorian-era warehouse. Here, they can experiment, act creatively and are free to take their work to another level.

We invite varied representations of queerness, subversive ideas and bold new creative content now and in future events.
